2017 Recycling Forum

For the past several years, SERDC has primarily focused on a “supply side” push to recycling.  With current changes in certain market factors, do we shift into more of a demand push to help develop more sustainable recycling efforts?  

  • Let’s look at all the potential obstacles.  
  • How can we help restructure processes by developing a common suite of material to reduce contamination?  
  • How do we develop better sorting processes that result in cleaner materials?  
  • What ideas are there to reduce collection costs in order to make the recycled materials more price competitive?

This day-and-a-half Forum, held at the Hyatt Place, downtown Asheville, will be a catalyst to shift the discussion towards strengthening demand of recycled feedstock.  Contamination, poor participation, aging infrastructure, low commodity prices, and possible trade bans.  How do we navigate these troubled times.  Key brand owners, private and public collectors, processors and material group representatives will be in Asheville to discuss how to find success in the future.  

NC SWANA credits: For attendance on Thursday, November 9th, a total of 5 CEUs are approved to be applied towards operator and manager recertification in North Carolina.

If you want to extend the event, there is an opportunity to start Wednesday early at The Biltmore Estate with a tour of the house, lunch and a behind-the-scenes tour of how Biltmore handles resources and waste on their property (more info below).

The Forum officially begins Wednesday, November 8 at 4 pm with a tour of New Belgium Brewing in Asheville, NC that looks not only at the brewing process and how sustainability was incorporated into the design, but also how the employee-owned company re-mediated the former brownfield site to the spectacular facility that exists today.  

Meet the SERDC Board Reception follows the tour at New Belgium with local and regional hors devours and beer (of course) at approximately 5:30 pm.

Thursday morning starts off at 9 am in the Meeting Center at the Downtown Hyatt Place hotel (2nd floor) with the Keynote from Brent Bell, President of Waste Management Recycle America and Jerry Powell, Editor of Resource Recycling and moves into materials-specific complexities and trends, the effect of brands demanding recycled content feedstock for their products and finally a panel/roundtable discussion.

On Thursday afternoon, after the Forum concludes, attendees can then tour the operations of nearby Sierra Nevada’s Platinum LEED facility, just outside of Asheville in Mills River, NC.

Hotel and forum Location

The Forum will be held at the Hyatt Place hotel (199 Haywood Street), in downtown Asheville.  Daily Parking is available on-site at $8/self-park ($16 valet).  The Asheville Visitors Center has free daily parking directly across the interstate (5 minute walk) and there are meters on the streets.

Limited rooms remain at the Hyatt (rates in the $200's/night). There are a variety of other hotels nearby.  Directly across the street is the Hotel Indigo (rates in the $160's/night).  The Crowne Plaza, Country Inn & Suites, Renaissance and Four Points Sheraton are just a few of the others within a 5 minute drive ($95-$175/night range).

Asheville in late October and early November is popular for it's spectacular fall foliage.  Asheville is also home to many great restaurants, chocolate shops, breweries, the North Carolina Arboretum and many art galleries downtown and in the River Arts District.  Mount Mitchell, the highest point East of the Mississippi River is only an hour away.  Come early or stay after and enjoy the diverse activities Asheville has to offer.

Wednesday, November 8:  Biltmore Estate and Sustainability Tour Option

Today, Biltmore continues to honor Vanderbilt’s legacy of preserving the land and protecting the environment.

  • A recent project was the solar panel installation that offsets more than 20% of the estate’s energy needs. The 9-acre, 1.7-megawatt system features 7,000 solar panels and uses advanced technology to perform even on cloudy days.
  • Biltmore’s Winery, has implemented a cork-recycling program by partnering with TerraCycle. Corks are collected at key locations across the estate, including the Winery’s tasting room and estate restaurants.

  • Best management practices are employed in Biltmore’s agricultural and forestry operations to prevent silt and runoff into waterways.

  • Biltmore’s ecological sensitivity extends to the kitchen and plate, as well. Their Field to Table Program focuses on growing – and finding – the best, freshest foods for the estate’s restaurants. 

  • Fryer oil is recycled locally into biodiesel, which is used in estate farming/horticulture operations. 

  • All of the restaurants compost food waste for agriculture. 

  • When sourcing ingredients, at least 10% of the food purchased comes from local or North Carolina providers. They produce eggs from free-range hens and meat from livestock raised antibiotic-free or growth-hormone-free.

Behind the Scenes Sustainability Tour information
This tour has been specially arranged by the Sustainability Coordinator with the estate to offer a rare look into how the Estate manages their resources (including waste and recycling) on the property. Limited seats available.

Travel by shuttle to the estate’s beautiful west side for a fascinating look at past and present forestry, agricultural, and sustainability initiatives. Meet your coach at the shuttle stop in Antler Hill Village for a memorable and enlightening experience.  Tour begins at 1:00 p.m.

Tour the Estate House

Known as “America’s Largest Home” and completed in 1895, George Vanderbilt’s 250-room chateau is as impressive today as it was more than a century ago. Biltmore House is truly a wonder of architecture and hospitality. Your day’s visit includes a self-guided tour of the house, as well as the beautiful gardens and grounds surrounding it, designed by renowned landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted. The house is open from 9 am -5 pm for you to enjoy on your own before lunch or after the sustainability tour.
